Cabin Construction
in the North Carolina mountains.
                                             (The 1996 Report)
On a hillside overlooking the Tuckaseegee River in Western North Carolina near Dillsboro, a couple of novice cabin builders camped on-site and provided TWO intensive weeks of labor and problem solving in late May to produce a simple 16-foot by 24-foot one-room cabin.
The first two of the following links take you to collections of 6 photos, each, to show you the progress through those two weeks of on-site cabin construction. The next links trace some additional building a couple of weeks later. (In particular, a front porch was extended out over the downslope in an engineering feat that we don't understand, either).
And then a couple of links describe other tasks which had to be completed before we could let the cabin winter over.
(Caution, any of the links may take several minutes to load on a dial-up modem):

People make things happen.
And there were many people involved prior to that 2-week building burst.
In particular:
- Joyce Lantz of Cleveland, Tennessee, cleared much of the site up to and over the edge (inadvertently) of the rock bluff on the property. She also pounded tenaciously on the floor and on the porch deck.
 - Tom Mabrey, aided, supported and second-guessed by Susan Mabrey, both of Madiera Beach, Florida, provided design, direction and energy to produce the solid footers and foundation for the floor and walls.
 - Andy Semak of Cleveland, Tennessee, provided transportation into the wilds of the NC woods for the 4 by 8 flooring sheets.
 - Bob Lantz, aided by his brother, Bill Lantz, both of Nashville, Tennessee, provided 4WD transportation of cabin walls and roofing into the wilds of the NC woods. They were aided by Andy Semak (again) and Barry Semak of Cleveland, Tennessee.
 - Murray Johnson of Oregon City, Oregon, and an older Bob Lantz of Cleveland, Tennessee, were the undocumented laborers who helped with the foundation construction, then built the floor upon that solid foundation, and finally returned for the two-week on-site construction rodeo as seen in these photos. Amazingly, they returned again and built the porch framing out in space over and above the hillside.

..Please be patient while the photos load.
