The following is a site put together by Bob (K.) Lantz from Nashville. He got the VW bus operating again and helped document a trip taken by the older Bob Lantz (and wife, Joyce):
Here are the Photos of the GGB... That's the Great GreenBus!
Sorry, it is gonna take a while to download. Feel free to page
down to the bottom and read first!
ohh don't look at
the canvas!
outside looking in!
Upstairs sleeping quarters!
Downstairs sleeping area!
living/dining/kitchen combo!
looking out the front of the popup!
There are a couple of things
of interest in these pics. The front passenger seat swivels around to look
into the living/dining/bed/kitchen combo. The lump in the downstairs bed
is just stuff I shoved under there to get it out of the picture. The stuff
in the roof of the front of the bus looks like table tops of a Wendys.
Need to make sure that you do not spend time reading while you should be
driving! The sink works. It has a little tank to hold fresh water, and
another under to hold gray water. Don't pay any attention to the tears
in the canvas. The upstairs bed is plenty big enough for me, and the covering
is in really good shape! There is a big screen that snaps into the back
hatch (looks like a big white thing in the picture) and there are curtains
for all the windows. There is a big green one that snaps around the front
window. There is some sort of hammock thing that fits over the front seats. It
is made of very heavy canvas, large bars, but I am not sure what it is
for. Whatever it is for, I have it! All of the cabinets and doors have
latches on them so that they do not open while traveling. There is a built
in cooler (with drain) and a very small closet with hangers in it. There
is a little electrical panel under the back seat (the downstairs bed makes
into a back seat ) that works when you plug the bus in. There is a panel
on the outside that you can plug an extension cord in. That works too!
We have tried it all! Dad wants to paint is some wimpy shade of blue or
something like that. I am currently discussing that mistake with him. He
has a hard time understanding this unique and classic color! (Besides,
who would want to drive something called the GBB? Doesn't roll off the
tongue nearly as well as GGB!)
This is how the GGB sits
at the moment. Actually it is in my garage waiting for me to finish putting
in a new electric fuel pump. For some reason, it died when I went out to
take these pictures.
I lied! It is now running
again, but not moving. It has its new fuel pump plumed and wired. However
(there is always a however isn't there!) the clutch is now completely out.
My next attempt will be to wish some more adjustment, but I think that
the time has really come for me to yank the engine and put in a new clutch!I
have been trying for a while to con someone into putting it in for me,
but no one is biting!
(8.25.97) OK I have now
started work on the bus. I have removed the engine, cleaned out the engine
compartment, removed the drive axles. (need some new boots and will repackthe
cvjs) and found a new clutch. Here
are the pictures of that work.
(2.5.98) I am almost ready
to send the bus to East Tennessee to its other part owner. He has promised
to finish the canvas, and in general get it ready for use as it is intended.
A final tune up is now needed, and I will take it to him. I can only hope
that the color that they choose (he is not alone in this undergoing, he
has a wife type person to listen to!) will do it justice.
Ok, now I need your help!
Mail your comments to Dad about
the color of this bus! Do your part to help keep it Green!
(7.24.98) A lot has
happened since I last updated this. First of all, thanks for your
help! The GGB is still the GGB! It didn't turn into the GBB
(Great Blue Bus) or anything weird like that. It was painted the
original color again Here is the way
to the pics of that adventure!
Even more exciting things
have occurred. The bus is living the life it was intended to. It
has gone camping. It took two companions along for company, and seems
to be taking very good care of them in return for the care they gave the
GGB. Starting here you will find the
trip they are currently on. I will continue to add on as the pics
come in.
